Locals stage protests after truck knocks kids to death
Lalitpur, January 8:
Lalitpur locals today disrupted traffic in the district and gheraoed Lalitpur Metropolitan Police Range (LMPR), Jawalakhel, demanding compensation as well as action against a truck driver who killed two pillion riders and injured motorcyclist at Satdobato this morning, police said.
Pillion riders Nishchal Basnet, 8, and Anushiya Khadka, 12, were killed and motorcyclist Mohan Basnet, 35, injured when the truck (plate number Ba 2 Kha 918) coming from Satdobato to Koteshwor hit the motorcycle (plate number Ba 14 pa 5284) that was also coming from the same direction. Nishchal is Mohan’s son and Anushiya is his niece.
Mohan, a resident of Dhapakhel-8, is undergoing treatment at the B & B Hospital.
Police immediately arrested truck driver Dhana Singh Thing of Dhading and seized the truck.
Locals of Lalitpur staged a demonstration at Gwarko and Jawalakhel chowk, blocked traffic and gheraoed the LMPR throughout the day.
Later, they let traffic resume after the police promised action against the driver as per the existing law.
“We are coordinating the dialogue between victims’ families and the truck owner. The dialogue is still underway,” Madhav Nepal, SP at the LMPR, said.
The locals were demonstrating in front of the police office till the evening when the dialogue was going on between the victims’ families and the truck owners.
