Madeshi leaders call on PM

KATHMANDU: Caretaker Prime Minister and Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and leaders of Madeshi parties, met on Tuesday morning to discuss about the current political situation. Top leaders of Madeshi Janadhikar Forum (MJF), Terai Mades Loktantrik Party (TMLP) and Sadbhawana Party (SP) had gone to the Prime Minister's residence at Baluwatar to meet him.

According to a source, the meeting was focused on the issues related to formation of the new government. In the meeting, they requested the PM to end the Maoists obstruction in the parliament in order to pave the way for formation of a majority government. But the PM refused to give in to their demand and vowed to continue the obstruction in the parliament unless the President rectified his 'unconstitutional' order to reinstate the army chief sacked by the government. Instead, the PM urged them to support his party's agitations.

The three Madeshi parties have revived their old alliance at the time of the Madesh Movement as Unified Democratic Madeshi Front and they are demanding that the would-be ruling alliance give clear commitment to implement the past agreements with the Front, as a condition for their support. But even within the alliance, they have different opinions in terms of whom to support on forming the new government. TMLP and SP are in favour of a UML-led new government but there is divided opinion within MJF whether to support Maoists or UML.
