Rastriya Samachar Samiti
Kathmandu, January 31:
Minister of Information and Communication, Dr Mohammad Mohsin, has said the media should write against the authoritarian character of the Maoists, who are trying to divide the country through murder and violence.
Speaking at the seminar on Role of electronic media in present context and responsibility towards the nation, organised by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, Nepal Television (NTV) unit here today, the minister said as political parties are highly regarded in democracy, the media should not disseminate news that disregard their leaders and lead to internal conflict. The press should also be able to apprise the people of the difference between authoritarianism and democracy and to make public the terrorist character of the Maoists.
Referring to the recent news reports carried by some foreign newspapers suggesting a collective effort in resolving the conflict in the country, the minister said, “We have to have the capacity of resolving the internal conflict of the country on our own, otherwise the sovereignity of the nation would fall under crisis”.
General manager of Nepal Television, Durganath Sharma, pointed out the need for honest and professional journalism by all media houses while also taking note of responsibility towards the nation. The programme was organised to mark the 20th anniversary of Nepal Television.
