The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport will continue to look after the roads under the care of the federal government within Kathmandu Metropolitan City for the time being, it is said.
KMC and the ministry reached an agreement in this regard at a meeting today attended by Physical Infrastructure Minister Mohammad Istiyak Rai and KMC Mayor Balendra Shah. At present, the federal government is taking care of roads although it is within the scope of work of KMC itself, said Minister Rai. Around 400-km roads in KMC is under the responsibility of the federal government, and they will be looked after by the ministry itself, he added.
The meeting also discussed the issue of managing public transportation in the city, according to the minister. Following the implementation of federalism, the ministry is now responsible for looking after the inter-province transport system. "We want to install a GPS device in vehicles." A committee has been formed to address problems related to driving licence and embossed number plate system after the minister assumed office.
