NEFIN on climate change

KATHMANDU: Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN), an umbrella organisation of all the indigenous nationalities of the country, has recently revealed its ‘position paper’ on climate change calling for a substantial reduction in the emission of Co2 due to deforestation.

They have demanded that the government act as per the UN Declarations on Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) while formulating policy, plan and programmes on climate change. “The government should respect the right to self-determination while formulating such policies and plans,” NEFIN states in its position paper. The paper outlined that the indigenous nationalities should be informed and their consent taken before formulatingplans and programmes on climate change.
