Nepal Medical Association lauds Supreme Court order

Kathmandu, July 1

Nepal Medical Association has lauded the June 28 order of the Supreme Court and urged all medical colleges to enrol students for post-graduate courses on merit basis.

“We appeal to the concerned stakeholders to duly comply with the apex court order and enrol students, who have been selected by the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, on merit basis,” stated a press release issued by the professional organisation of medical and dental doctors of Nepal today.

“The decision, we believe, has offered a golden opportunity to capable and meritorious students to pursue post-graduate courses,” it added. The apex court had ordered Universal College of Medical Sciences, Bhairahawa and National Medical College, Birgunj to enrol candidates recommended by the IoM for post-graduate courses and to charge them only prescribed fees.

The students moved the SC after these two colleges refused to enroll them for post-graduate courses, which enrolled other students who had fewer marks (between 50 and 62) in the IoM’s entrance exam results.

The petitioners had claimed in their writ petitions that they passed the entrance exam and Open House Counseling conducted by IoM for academic year 073/074 and their names were published in the merit list on June 21.
