Nepal Students’ Union nominations begin; voting scheduled for tomorrow

Lalitpur, August 15

The nomination process for various posts in the 11th National General Convention of Nepal Students’ Union, the student wing of the Nepali Congress began today on the ninth day after the opening of the convention.

The Election Committee led by Bharat Prasad Kharel, president of Democratic Lawyers’ Association had yesterday made public the time-table for the nomination. The nomination process began from 8:00am today.

The committee had earlier announced it would make public the final list of candidates for various posts by today evening, but since dispute over convention representatives continued, the committee today decided to resume the nomination tomorrow morning.

Kharel said, “Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and senior leaders Ramchandra Paudel are committed to sort out the issues of convention representatives and they urged me to extend the time for nomination, so we decided to close the nomination process at 6:00pm today and resume it from 8:00am till 11:00am tomorrow.”

He stated that the voters’ list would also undergo a slight change. Currently, the election committee has received a list of 3,760 voters and the number is likely to increase tomorrow, he informed. He also stated that voting will last from 7:00am to 7:00pm on Wednesday.

After a clash yesterday, senior party leaders decided to field their candidates by making panels.

Party President Deuba and youth leaders Ganga Thapa and Pradip Paudel decided to file their candidates from one panel.

This panel is going to field Nain Singh Mahar for the post of president and Kundan Kafle for the post of general secretary. Manoj Mani Acharya will be filing candidacy for the post of NSU president from Paudel’s panel.

The Paudel-led faction has been raising its voice against the addition of ‘fake’ representatives in the voter’s list. They had warned they would not take part in the convention with the demand for correction in the voters’ list.

A clash had ensued between agitating NSU cadres close to Paudel and police personnel yesterday.
