New constitution by mid-August: PM Koirala

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushil Koirala said that the new constitution would be promulgated within mid-August.

Accepting a memorandum submitted by Reporters’ Club Nepal along with a demand for full press freedom in the new constitution, at his official residence in Baluwatar on Saturday morning, Prime Minister Koirala said that the new constitution would reflect the aspirations of all sides, communities, ethnicities, languages and culture.

He also shared that efforts were being made to bring the Mohan Baidhya-led CPN-Maoist and the Madhes-centric parties on board in the constitution drafting process. Parties who have accepted democracy and fought elections cannot negate it.

Stating that there was a huge opportunity now for bringing prosperity to the country following a long struggle for a change, the Prime Minister emphasised on the need for parties to end animosity to utilise the opportunity and maintain political stability in the country.

“Press freedom cannot be limited in a democracy”, he said and pledged to ensure that it is guaranteed in the new constitution. The press too has a big responsibility now and urged all to move ahead with a positive frame of mind.
