No need to impeach Lokman Singh Karki, say lawmakers

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers of various parties on Sunday said there was no need to impeach Chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, Lokman Singh Karki.

Speaking at an interaction in the Capital today, the lawmakers said a proposal of public importance filed at the House demanding discussion on accusations against Karki could not lead the issue to the impeachment motion.

CPN Maoist Centre lawmaker Ram Narayan Bidari said, "There is no essence and need of the impeachment. It is just a cheap propaganda."

"It is not necessary, legally, politically and constitutionally."

Earlier, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital's orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC, while staging the fast-unto-death for the eighth time, had demanded that Karki be impeached as he promoted corruption in Nepal's medical education sector.

Following the veteran surgeon's demand, lawmakers Gagan Thapa, Dhanaraj Gurung and Shyam Shrestha had registered the proposal of public importance at the House demanding that the legislative body discuss and probe into the allegation.

Speaking on the proposal today, Bidari said the motion was just meant for saving the life of Dr KC and its essence now was over after Dr KC broke the fast.

Bidari even claimed that Karki was doing a good job and everyone should encourage him.

Speaking at the same function, CPN-UML lawmaker Banshidhar Mishra also echoed Bidari and said the demand for impeachment was baseless and the propaganda was spread by people with ill intents.

"Our party is very serious toward it and we cannot think about impeaching him."

Likewise, Sadbhawana Party Co-Chairman Laxman Lal Karna said the demand for impeachment should not be hyped as the proposal of public importance has not demanded it.

He termed the issue of impeachment as an untimely concern and said the United Democratic Madhesi Front was not interested in it.
