President confers honorary rank of General on Indian Army chief

KATHMANDU: Nepal's President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Wednesday conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepal Army on the Indian Army chief Bipin Raut here in the Capital.

A special ceremony was organised at the President's Office in Sheetal Niwas today to honour the Indian Army chief as per the tradition practised by the armies of Nepal and India for decades.

Gen Raut arrived in Kathmandu yesterday on a four-day official visit on the invitation of Nepal Army Chief Rajendra Chhetri.

Since 1950, Nepal and India have been honouring the army chiefs of the other country with the honorary rank "in recognition of mutual harmonious relationships between two armies."

Also , Gen Rawat paid a courtesy call on Defence Minister Bal Krishna Khand at the latter's office in Singhadarbar and Gen Rajendra Chhetri at the Nepal Army headquarters today.

During his stay in Kathmandu, the Indian Army chief is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal also.
