President Yadav prorogues parliament session

Kathmandu, September 19

President Ram Baran Yadav today prorogued the current session of the Legislature Parliament on the recommendation of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.

PM Koirala had recommended the Head of State to end the parliamentary session on Saturday.

The decision was taken in order to remove constitutional obstacles to Koirala’s upcoming visit to New York for the 70th UN General Assembly. PM Koirala is scheduled to leave for New York on September 23 and return home on October 2.

According to sources, the PM might even cut his visit short to meet the statutory obligations.

As per the transitional provision of the new constitution, the new prime minister must be elected within seven days of statute promulgation if the parliamentary session is under way.

It means if the session of the Parliament is not prorogued before Sunday, the scheduled date for the announcement of the new constitution, it will have to elect a new PM before September 28. Nevertheless, the President will have to call a new session within seven days of statute promulgation.
