Process to appoint election commissioners begins

KATHMANDU: The Constitutional Council has decided to update the roster of those eligible persons willing to submit an application for the posts of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioner (EC).

A Council meeting held at Singha Durbar in the Capital on Friday at the chairmanship of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has decided to issue a seven-day notice to this effect within some days.

Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar, also a member of the Council, said that the decision was taken as per the procedures to employ eligible persons in the constitutional body.

The positions of CEC and EC have remained vacant after former CEC Nilkantha Upreti and ECs Ram Bhakta PB Thakur and Dolakh Bahadur Gurung retired.

The meeting was also attended by the council member and acting Chief Justice Girish Chandra Lal and leader of the main opposition party, Nepali Congress President, Sushil Koirala.
