Protection of languages stressed

Bhaktapur, February 8

Stakeholders have expressed concern about the government’s lack of interest in preserving the cultural and linguistic heritage of the country.

Speaking at a discussion on the importance of localisation of language and cultural heritage, organised by Language and Heritage Conservation Council in Bhaktapur today, Laxmi Prasad Khatiwada, president of the council, said the country was losing its linguistic roots because of western influence.

He said the government should recognise all languages spoken in the country as national languages.

He also stressed on imparting education in mother tongues and promoting all regional languages of the country.

Member of Parliament Kedar Sanjel said the government should pay serious attention to issues related to national identity.

“The nation’s identity and glory lie in our unique languages and cultural heritage. Our language is our ancestral wealth and we must preserve it for future generations.”

At the programme, Rameshwor Upadhyay, president of Principal Union, said external influence on national language and culture should be discouraged.
