Renowned climbers arriving

KATHMANDU: The country is all set to host the world’s renowned climbers in the last week of April as the government decided to mark the golden jubilee of the first ascent to Mt Manaslu and Mt Lhotse.

According to the Ministry of Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation, more than 100 climbers, including Japanese mountaineer Minoru Higeta, the first to scale Mt Manaslu in 1956, Reinhold Messner (Italy), Junko Tabei (Japan) and Ted Atkins (UK) have already confirmed to grace the golden jubilee function on April 30.

Among the climbers, over 80 will be from Japan, while president of the Union of All Asian Association Lee In-Jeong and the president of the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation Frits Vrijlandt will also attend the Mt Manaslu-Mt Lhotse golden jubilee celebrations, Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, who is also the member secretary for the organising committee said.
