Rights bodies’ bid to bring Tarai woes to light

Kathmandu, December 30:

Three Human Rights organisations are jointly visiting 16 Tarai districts with an aim to listen to the voices of the public, rights organisations and local political leaders.

“Forum for Protection of Human Rights (FOPHUR), Joint Human Rights Forum and Human Development and Peace Campaign are jointly organising interactions and mass meetings in 16 districts over current issues of Tarai and we will find peaceful way to resolve those problems from the rights perspective,” said Padma Ratna Tuladhar, the chairman of FOPHUR, today.

He said demands of Tarai people would be documented to make a common agenda of Madhesis and those discriminated against by the state with necessary amendments and improvement.

Madhesi leader Ramraja Prasad Singh said nobody should be alarmed at the united move made by some leaders of Tarai, as this is aimed at solving problems there. “Pahadis living in Tarai need not flee and sending them out of Tarai should not be the agenda of agitation in Tarai. All should learn to live together,” he said.

Mahendra Raya Yadav, a leader of newly formed Madhesi-Tarai Loktantrik Party, said the state had been resorting to decisive politics in Tarai.
