Rights body releases report

Lalitpur, December 25:

Of the 24 incidents of human rights violation that took place in Nepal in 2006, none of the sides concerned — the government and the Maoists — took action against those involved in it. As a result, the victims’ sides have not been able to get justice.

Even following the peace agreement reached between the government and the Maoists, a 19-year-old civilian, Ramesh Khanal was killed by Umesh Shanker ‘Laxmi’ at the Satellite camp of the Chulachuli Base Camp of the Maoists on November 26.

Many civilians are still under custody for their alleged role in the incident that took place in Belbari of Morang where a local girl was raped and killed.

These were the findings of a report released by the Human Rights Treaty Monitoring Coordination Committee today at a programme organised on the theme ‘’Impunity in Nepal: main concern of human rights’’.

Speakers said the inability of taking action against the criminals had been promoting an environment of impunity in Nepal and added that everyone would be able to enjoy human rights only if the sides concerned were sensitive towards this end.

Monitoring of rights situation in Nepal has been carried out from the national and international level; however, no research has been done, they said.
