SC clubs all cases against Sobhraj
Kathmandu, January 12:
The Supreme Court today said it would hear all cases related to the international serial killer Charles Sobhraj Gurumukh.
A division bench of justices Paramananda Jha and Ram Kumar Prasad Shah today ordered for the production of all cases related to Sobhraj.
“Produce Sobhraj’s appeal plea and the contempt of court case he filed against the government as well as the fake passport case filed by government against Sobhraj for the hearing,” ordered the bench. The order came after a hearing conducted today. The Supreme Court will begin hearing on an appeal filed by Sobhraj seeking to reverse the lower court verdict imposed on him for 20 years.
During today’s hearing, senior advocate Basanta Ram Bhandari and Rajaram Dhakal pleaded on behalf of Sobhraj. Sobhraj had moved the apex court some months ago challenging the Patan Appellate Court verdict that upheld a Kathmandu District Court decision passed of August 28 that slapped a 20-year jail term on him and ordered the government to confiscate all his property under Clause 13(3) of the Murder Chapter of the Civil Code 1963.
In his plea, Sobhraj claimed the lower courts’ verdicts were baseless without evidence.
