SC verdict on petty kings on March 17

Kathmandu, February 17:

The Supreme Court (SC) said today that it will pronounce its verdict regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging a legal provision which still allows conferment of the title of petty Kings on March 17.

A three-member bench of justices Min Bahadur Rayamajhi, Sharada Prasad Pundit and Paramananda Jha, set the date following today’s hearing.

Advocate Om Praksah Aryal had filed the PIL against the Council of Ministers, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, House of Representatives, Upper House and Parliament Secretariat, charging the said of not taking appropriate action to annul and void the Rajya Rajauta Ain of 2017 BS, which allows the title of petty kings (for life) to be conferred on people of Salyan, Janjarkot, Mustang and Bajhang. The petitioner challenged the titles of the petty kings of Mustang, Manang, Salyan, Jajarkot, Bajhang, Bhirkot, Darnal, Bajura, Thalahari, Galkote, Gulmi, Garaune, Malneti, Dullu, Parvet and Nuwakot. He has demanded that Section 3 of the Ain be quashed as he has claimed that it is against Article 11 of the Constitution.
