Scientists to mark anniversary of April 25 tremblor

Kathmandu, April 23

More than 85 scientists, including globally recognised ones, are meeting in Kathmandu on Sunday and Monday to mark the first anniversary of the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck the country on April 25 last year.

The National Seismological Centre under the Department of Mines and Geology said as many as 41 international scientists have confirmed their participation in the two-day workshop on lessons learnt from the earthquake. The workshop is aimed at sharing lessons learned from the quake.

Renowned geologist Prof Jean-Philippe Avouac and Roger Bilham have also arrived in the capital to present their papers in the workshop, according to the NSC.

The workshop will be inaugurated at 11:56 am on Sunday, the time at which the earthquake had struck many districts of Nepal with its epicenter in Barpak of Gorkha exactly a year ago.
