KATHMANDU, APRIL 25
The government has begun screening landless squatters displaced from the Bagmati riverbank in Thapathali, with registration and relocation processes currently underway.
Teams from the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority and the Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee are collecting family records at Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwar. By 1:30 pm, 23 families had been registered, officials said.
According to the authority, families verified through the government's registration process are being relocated to temporary shelters, including the Radha Soami Satsang Centre in Kirtipur. The government has arranged food and accommodation for those relocated.
Officials said details of genuine landless families are being compiled before transferring them to designated shelters. The government plans to provide land to eligible families in the second phase after temporary resettlement.
The displaced families were brought to the stadium following the demolition of illegally built structures in Thapathali.
Meanwhile, demolition of another squatter settlement at Garigaun in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-9 is also underway. A joint team of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Metropolitan Police has been deployed for the operation.
