Security beefed up in valley

Kathmandu, October 10:

Security in the valley has been beefed up for Dashain. Talking to reporters yesterday evening, a day before the Dashian holidays started, Deputy Inspector General of Police at the Valley Police Office (VPO) Krishna Basnet said security in the valley had been tightened considering the trend of an increase in the number of crimes during the festive period. According to the VPO, cases of hooliganism, fighting, stealing and looting are on the rise during Dashain. “We have established around 90 temporary police posts in different localities of Kathmandu to keep a close eye on any antisocial activity and prevent it on time,” Basnet said.

The Valley Police Office has also deployed over 100 police personnel in plain clothes, he said. Basnet, however, didn’t disclose the total number of police personnel deployed in the valley.

“The Police Headquarters has assigned us additional police personnel this Dashain,” Basnet added. The VPO decided to add temporary police posts after its remarkable success in the past few weeks in arresting felons through its experimental campaign. “We had established a few such temporary posts some weeks ago as an experiment. As it was successful, we are expanding the posts in other parts of the valley during Dashain,” DIG Basnet, said. The VPO was especially excited about the arrest of looters at a book-shop at Bhotahity on October 5 in the course of its experimental campaign.
