Deuba-Sitaula panel sweeps Nepal Women Association election

KATHMANDU: The election committee of Nepal Women Association (NWA), a sister wing of Nepali Congress (NC), has announced Uma Regmi as the new President of the Association, on Saturday.

Regmi, who led the joint panel of leaders loyal to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and influential leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula, won the election held on Friday with 998 votes out of total 1,814 cast, while her fellow candidate Mina Pandey got 796 votes.

Pandey was supported by the party's senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel.

The Deuba-Sitaula panel has secured wins in all 56 positions, which the elections were held for.

It has been reported that 33 of them are close to Deuba and 23 to Sitaula.

Dhana Khatiwoda has been elected as the Secretary General with 968 votes and competitor Goma KC with 776.

As the treasurer of the Association, Janaki Singh was elected with 911 votes.

Earlier last month, Deuba and Sitaula had forged the alliance during the Nepal Students Union election also.

The joint panel had secured victory in major NSU positions including the President.

In the NSU, however, the panel had failed to ensure the clean sweep as many student leaders close to Paudel had also won some positions.
