Sign Ottawa Treaty to end landmines: BLCN to govt

KATHMANDU: Ban Landmines Campaign Nepal (BLCN) has drawn serious attention of the government for the early approval of Ottawa Treaty. Otherwise known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction, the Treaty bans the use of anti-personnel mines around the world.

A delegation of BLCN on Monday met with the chairman of National Human Rights Commission Kedar Nath Upadhya and its members and urged them to persuade the government for early approval of the Treaty. In reply, chairman Upadhya said, Treaty Consultation Section of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) would make a comprehensive study of the Treaty made to protect humanity and submit it with recommendation to the government.

"The government should not delay approval of the Treaty," said a press statement issued by BLCN to mark March 1 International Day.

Gauri Pradhan, member, UNHR reassured of pressuring the government for the approval of the Treaty which prohibits the use of landmines and anti-personnel mines. He also informed that UNHRC was recommending the government to provide compensation and make arrangement for medical treatment of the victims of landmines elsewhere in the country.
