Silence period for presidential election to begin Saturday midnight

KATHMANDU: The silence period for the presidential election will come into effect from Saturday midnight, said the Election Commission.

As per the election code of conduct, the political parties, candidates, leaders, civil society, media and general public have been barred from campaigning or soliciting votes during silence period, said EC Spokesperson Nawaraj Dhakal.

The Commission has further appealed the concerned authorities to comply with the election code of conduct to hold the presidential election in fair, fear-free and peaceful manner.

Election Code of Conduct (Fifth Amendment 2074) 2072

(1) Election publicity campaign or soliciting votes shall not be allowed;

(2) Respective election symbols and election campaign materials kept within the periphery of 300 meters of the polling centres shall be removed before the silence period begins;

(3) No votes shall be solicited and election campaign shall be conducted through social network with the use of electronic means such as SMS, facebook and viber;

(4) No any news or notice shall be published or aired in a way that propagates the campaigning of any candidate or political party.
