Sit-in at Naxal Bhagawati demands end to animal sacrifice

KATHMANDU: A sit-in was staged at the Naxal Bhagawati Temple in Kathmandu today demanding an end to animal sacrifice at holy places.

The Non-Violence Lovers Vegetarian Association staged the demonstration.

This sit-in was a part of the mega campaign launched by the Association a year ago.

The campaigners stayed at the temple from 7 to 9 am on Saturday as most of the sacrifices take place during this time on the weekends, appealing to the devotees against animal sacrifice in the name of pleasing gods and goddesses.

"The temple is a common place for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike," said Bikesh Shrestha, the Association's President.

He furthermore called for the end to animal sacrifice in order not to hurt other people who visit the temple.

The campaign that started on May 30, 2015 from Dakshinkali has been organising multiple awareness programmes around 1,000 temples across the country, focusing on the temples that have the practice of animal sacrifice, said campaigner Durganath Dahal.
