Six NSU central members resign
KATHMANDU: Six central committee members of Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) aligned to the Nepali Congress today resigned from their post accusing the student wing of not announcing the date for a general convention.
The central committee members Ramesh Rayamajhi, Bir Bahadur Bista, Yubaraj Pandey, Rakesh Khatri, Krishna Kumari Basnet and Sabin Tamang told a press meet that there was no need for them to stay in the committee that cannot even announce the date for a general convention. Since the last few months, they had launched a campaign to pressure the central committee to announce the date but in vain.
Speaking at the meet, Rayamajhi, who is also the coordinator of the campaign, said that the general convention should have been held on May 29, 2009. “We urged the central committee leaders to declare the date but they ignored us,” he said. Bir Bahadur Bista said that the present committee had remained defunct for the last 25 months so the resignation was necessary to exert pressure on leaders.
Meanwhile Pradeep Poudel, president, NSU said that resignation was not the solution to the problem. He said he needed support from all the central committee members to announce the date. Poudel maintained that they would propose April 19 for the convention.
“We are going to hold a meeting and finalise the date and venue for the general convention within a week,” he added.
He urged party members, district presidents and others to hold the conventions in their respective areas. NSU central committee comprises 119 members.
