Speakers call for local-level empowerment to wipe out social malpractices
A number of speakers at a programme have stressed for empowering local representatives for the eradication of social malpractices like untouchablility, racial and socio-economic discriminations. They also noted the existence of such inhumane practices as failure of ensuring good governance and decentralisation to a large extent.
“Though discriminations on the ground of race, caste, profession, sex, religion and among others have been legally expelled, the Dalits, the most productive and creative class in the society are still victimised,” said vice-chairman of National Assembly, Ram Preet Paswan at the conclusion of four-day training on –Role of Dalit representatives for the successful implementation of local self governance and decentralisation—here on Friday. Paswan made this remark while giving away certificates to the participants.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jeet Bahadur Gurung, project advisor of DANIDA, called upon the participants to impart and implement the skill and knowledge gained to ensure social justice and good governance. Stating that local representatives have a vital role on creating awareness for eliminating discriminations, he stated: “Awareness will generate spirit for basic human rights on socio-economic, political, cultural and other rights, which eventually lead to equal representation and participation.”
MPs Bijul Kumar Biswokarma and Rishi Babu Pariyar and Gyanu Gaire, councillor of Dadeldhura DDC also spoke on the occasion chaired by D B Sagar, president of Jana Utthan Pratisthan. Altogether 60 Dalit representatives from 45 districts took part in the training organised by JUP.
