Stolen motorcycles rot at MTPD
KATHMANDU: There is a never-ending list of stolen bikes at the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD), but there are only a few coming to pick them up.
Consider this: Of the total of 390 theft motorbikes impounded by the police during the last six months, there were just 86 respondents, who came file the claim.
It’s uncanny almost, as if people are not interested to take back their property, said Binod Singh, DIG, Metropolitan Traffic Police Division.
“The rest of them have not appeared until now. Thus, we sent those unclaimed bikes to the customs office,’’ he said.
“For the additional manpower, MTPD will hold talks with the Nepal Police headquarters, very soon,” DIG Singh assured.
“People hurriedly come to complain us about the theft of their bikes as soon as the incident occur, but do not follow-up after that,” he said, adding that the police cannot retain those vehicles with them for a long time. “What we do is that we send them to the customs”. The MTPD has received 877 applications from July to December, 2009 concerning motorbike theft from the residents of the Kathmandu Valley. This was made public today amidst a meeting of the MTPD officials.
