Stray dog menace worries Singha Durbar officials

Kathmandu, February 25

The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has directed all ministries and offices situated on the premises of Singha Durbar to prevent the entry of stray animals, mainly dogs, into the administrative headquarters.

Officials are worried about increasing population of dogs on the premises of Singha Durbar, which always wears a busy look with the movement of VIPs, foreign dignitaries and service-seekers during office hours.

An official said Singha Durbar premises have become a safe haven for more than 200 stray dogs.

“Haphazard disposal of leftover foods and waste produced from the canteens have been attracting more stray dogs to Singha Durbar.

Therefore, the ministries, offices and canteens have been asked to manage waste produced by them on their own and not allow dogs to enter the premises as far as possible,” said the OPMCM.

Earlier, Singha Durbar Secretariat Reconstruction Committee provided the canteens two colour-coded recycling bins each to all 26 canteens for segregating waste. It has also issued directives to the concerned canteen operators to dispose waste properly.

Green bin was for managing biodegradable waste and red bin for non-biodegradable ones.

The canteens and 50 government buildings, including 25 ministries, produce a truckload of trash daily. SSRC has formed a monitoring and inspection team to regulate waste management and issue warnings to canteens and government offices.

Meanwhile, the SDSRC said it has completed construction of two public toilets, while one more toilet is under construction on the premises of the central administrative headquarters.

All these public toilets are disabled-friendly and even a wheelchair-bound person can use the toilet without difficulty.
