Kathmandu, March 10:

The agitating students of the Thapathali Engineering Campus, Institute of Engineering, withdrew their strike and ended the lockout at the campus today after the campus

administration agreed to their demand and decided to form an investigation committee to look into the matter. Normal classes will resume from tomorrow. The engineering students had called a strike from March 6 to protest the high rate of failure in the second year-second semester diploma level examinations. According to the students, 50 per cent of the students who had appeared for the exam had failed in the Internal Assessment of the second year-second semester of Computer and Electronics examination. They blamed the “revengeful motive of teachers” for the large number of failures.

The students had demanded that action be taken against five teachers they said were responsible for the act. Student Tarun Ranjan Bhatta said the dialogue between the two parties had concluded on a positive note with the campus administration agreeing to look into the matter. According to the campus administration, the problem has been resolved as the administration has agreed to meet the students’ demand and the teachers responsible would not be allowed to take classes till the investigation committee submits its report. However, though the students had said classes would resume from today, classes remained suspended as the University Teachers’ Association, TEC committee, protested the campus administration’s decision to bar the teachers from teaching the diploma third year classes.
