Apex court seeks reasons for envoy nomination withdrawal

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a show cause notice in the name of government seeking reasons why the Cabinet decided to withdraw names of 14 ambassadorial nominees from the parliamentary hearing.

A single bench of Chief Justice Sushila Karki also ordered that the government keep the decision in the status quo, which in effect would not let the government to take any decision about the issue until a further notice.

Likewise, the bench has summoned both the petitioners and the defendants to present themselves before the Court to discuss whether an interim order should be issued in response to the writ.

Earlier, on Monday, four persons, whose names were withdrawn by the Cabinet decision on August 5, had moved the apex court demanding a writ of certiorari against the government decision.

Those moving the court were Yuvraj Karki (recommended for South Korea), Shiv Maya Tumbahamphe (Israel), Khadga Bahadur KC (Japan) and Narad Bhardwaj (Sri Lanka).

They had named the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Legislature-Parliament Secretariat and Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee as defendants in the case.
