Tamang body stages sit-in, calls Nepal bandh on Aug 22

Bhaktapur, August 20:

The Tamang Rastriya Mukti Morcha (TRMM) today staged an hour-long sit-in in front of the District Administration Offices (DAOs) in the districts where Tamangs are in majority.

“We staged the sit-ins to press the government to meet our 16-point charter of demands,” said Nani Babu Tamang, central member of the TRMM. The Tamang body has announced a Nepal bandh on August 22. Addressing a mass gathered at the DAO in Bhaktapur, he said: “We will be compelled to stage armed protests if our demands are not addressed on time.”

According to him, they will organise a torch rally tomorrow at 6:30 pm from Taumadi in Bhaktapur. They had submitted their demands to the Prime Minister on June 19 and signatures of 5,00,500 people on 10 July.

They are demanding autonomy for Tamangs, federal state mechanism, investigation into the

oppression of the Tamang community, especially the Doramba incident, and assurance of constituent assembly polls.
