Tara Prasad Pokharel appointed Nepal envoy to Brazil
KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Wednesday appointed Tara Prasad Pokharel as Nepal's Ambassador to Brazil.
Pokharel, also a former spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was working as a Joint Secretary at the MoFA.
The appointment was made in accordance to Article 282(1) of the Constitution, according to a statement issued by the President's Office.
He is one among eight career diplomats recommended by the Cabinet and endorsed by the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee for ambassadorial appointment recently.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the President had appointed Sewa Lamsal Adhikari and Ramesh Prasad Khanal as ambassadors to Pakistan and Germany respectively.
Both Adhikari and Khanal too are MoFA joint-secretaries.
While the government had recommended 22 names for diplomatic appointments in April, it had withdrawn 14 names selected considering political backgrounds after the the government reigns was taken over by CPN Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal in early August.
The other eight career diplomats, however, were lucky enough to get through the House hearing to ensure the appointment.
Some nominees among 14, who names were later withdrawn by the government, have challenged the government decision to pull out their names at the Supreme Court.
The case is currently sub-judice.
