Teachers stage sit-in before MoE

KATHMANDU: Around 500 teachers associated with Teachers’ Union of Nepal (TUN) were arrested while they were staging a sit-in before the Ministry of Education this morning. The teachers were freed later.

“We had been staging the sit-in to press the government to implement past agreements signed between us and the government,” Krishna Prasad Dhakal, president, TUN, told The Himalayan Times. Some of the teachers were injured in the scuffle with the police, said Dhakal, adding that the sit-in was part of the fourth phase protest programme organised by TUN.

Giving temporary teachers a permanent status, declaring teachers killed during the insurgency martyrs, and providing compensation to the displaced teachers are among the TUN’s major demands.
