Teachers to shut down private schools
Kathmandu, March 8:
The teachers and staffers from the private and boarding schools of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur under the Institutional School Teachers’ Union-Nepal (ISTU-N) are planning to organise a sit-in protest programme at the Ministry of Education and Sports tomorrow.
Narayan Poudel, ISTU valley chief, said: “All the private and boarding schools including the higher secondary schools will be closed tomorrow and we will organise a sit-in protest programme in front of the Ministry.”
“This is our symbolic protest to warn the government that we can resort to even more decisive protest programmes if our demands are not met,” said Poudel. “We will be compelled to shut down schools for an indefinite period from the third week of March.”
The ISTU has been protesting since January demanding that the government fulfill their charter of three demands including giving appointment letters to the teachers, providing salary and facilities on par with the teachers employed in the government schools and appointment of an ISTU member in school management committees.
