Thamel in eye of ‘sex racket’ storm
Kathmandu, October 20:
Metropolitan Police Sector, Sorakhutte, arrested 22 persons from two guesthouses in Thamel last night on the charge of involving in prostitution.
“Thirteen females and eight males were arrested from the infamous Regal Guest House, now renamed as Fewa Guest House, and Silk Road Guest House in Thamel at around midnight,” police inspector Basundhara Khadka said.
Many customers managed to flee through the windows after coming to know about the police raid, she said.
She added that the police carried out raids following tip-off from locals that sexual activities were being carried out in those guesthouses by locking the main gates. The police had deployed plainclothes police personnel to keep an eye on the activities of guesthouses, she said.
“The girls hired by the guesthouses used to share their profits with the owners,” Khadka said.
He maintained that owners of the guesthouses don’t stay in their guesthouses. She also said that many of the arrested females had confessed that they were involved in sexual activities to maintain their life standard.
All the arrested have been sent to the Metropolitan Police Range (MPR), Hanumandhoka, where they are being integorrated.
“They claimed that they had gone to the guesthouses to stay after completing their works in discos and restaurants,” DSP Narendra Upreti of the MPR said.
