Tharus demand Tharuwan province from Nawalparasi to Kanchanpur

KATHMANDU: The Tharu Rastriya Mukti Morcha has demanded with the government an amendment to the Constitution so as to ensure a Tharu-dominated Tharuwan province from Nawalparasi to Kanchanpur.

The Morcha's Central Committee, while meeting Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal at his official residence in Kathmandu on Friday, drew the PM's attention for an amendment to Article 65(3) of the Constitution about delineation of the provinces.

The delegation also demanded that the government form a Tharu Commission and investigate the violent incident in Tikapur of Kailali in which eight security personnel and a child were killed through an independent commission.

During the meeting, PM Dahal acknowledged that Tharus had an important contribution to the country's national unity, according to a statement issued by the PM's Secretariat.

Mentioning that he has taken their demands seriously, PM Dahal said that he would take an appropriate decision about it after making consultation with other political parties.

Meanwhile, the PM informed the delegation that a commission led by former Justice Girish Chandra Lal has been formed to investigate into incidents of Madhes and Tharu movements and other agitations held over promulgation of the Constitution last year.
