UML not against Constitution amendment, says lawmaker
KATHMANDU: While the main opposition CPN-UML has been obstructing the House business against the Constitution amendment bill, one of its lawmakers said the party was not against the amendment.
Speaking at an interaction at the Reporters' Club Nepal in the Capital today, UML lawmaker Shatrughna Mahato said his party would support the amendment bid if the current bill was withdrawn and registered a new one in consensus of major political parties.
"We are not saying that the Constitution should not be amended," he said, "But, we are thinking that the amendment is not necessary today."
Mahato reiterated his party's stance that the government should focus more on Constitution implementation than the amendment.
The lawmaker stressed that parties should stay together to implement the national charter.
Speaking at the same function, Nepali Congress lawmaker Mahendra Yadav, however, expressed his confidence that the amendment bill would be endorsed by the two thirds majority even if the main opposition UML did not support the bill.
He was of the view that the proposal was for making the Constitution all-acceptable.
