UN Deputy Secretary General arriving

Kathmandu, March 1

United Nations Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson is arriving in Nepal on a three-day visit on March 9.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tara Prasad Pokhrel said Eliasson is visiting Nepal in connection with the UN World Humanitarian Summit scheduled to be held in Istanbul, Turkey in May and to take stock of post-earthquake humanitarian situation in Nepal.

The senior UN official will call on President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli as well as other senior ministers and bureaucrats.

A source said issues such as post quake reconstruction, humanitarian crisis faced by Nepal due to the earthquake and the blockade as well as post-constitution political development will figure in his discussions with Nepali stakeholders.

Meanwhile, UN Assistant Secretary General and Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and Pacific at UNDP Haoliang Xu is also visiting Nepal from March 12 to 14.

During his stay, he will discuss post-earthquake reconstruction issues, sources said.
