UNESCO bid to check AIDS
Kathmandu, March 6:
UNESCO’s Kathmandu Office is launching “HIV/ AIDS and Education- a tool kit” for the Ministry of Education and Sports tomorrow with a belief that it would be a practical guide in preventing people from being affected by the virus.
According to a UNESCO press release issued here today, the toolkit was tested in a two-day workshop in November 2006 followed by a training with participants from MoES and other stakeholders in December 2006.
The HIV/AIDS situation in Nepal has been categorised as a concentrated epidemic which is spreading rapidly amongst its most-at-risk group. According to the National Centre for STD and AIDS Control, a total of 70,253 people in the adult population (15-49) years are estimated to be living with HIV virus. The largest number of HIV positive cases in the last 18 months was reported among 15-24 age group and 30-39 age group.
