The United States has welcomed the appointment of Sushila Karki as Nepal's interim Prime Minister and the restoration of calm after last week's deadly protests.
In a statement today, the US Embassy in Kathmandu commended President Ramchandra Paudel and youth leaders for their commitment to a democratic resolution while mourning the loss of lives. The embassy also acknowledged the Nepali Army and Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ashok Raj Sigdel for their "vital role in restoring order and facilitating a peaceful transition of civilian government."
The United States expressed readiness to work with the interim administration as it prepares for new parliamentary elections within six months.
