Valley garbage collected partially

KATHMANDU: Unfettered by strikes in the local bodies called by the employee unions, garbage collection and dumping continued, albeit partially in the capital today.

According to the Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre, the trash was successfully collected from two municipalities of Bhaktapur and Lalitpur today.

About 200 metric tonnes of garbage collected from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City was successfully dumped at the Aletar Landfill Site in Nuwakot, today, Rabin Man Shrestha, chief, Environment Management Department, KMC, said.

"Even as the employees remained divided over the strike-some supporting and others opposing the strike-dumping and collection went on," he added.

The Local Bodies' Joint Movement Central Coordination Committee, including the Local Body Employees Union, Nepal National Personnel Association, VDC Employees Union and Nepal Municipal Employees Association are on protest from January 21, demanding for trade union rights, promotion and recruitment on par with civil servants.
