Valley traffic disrupted for hours
Kathmandu, April 28:
Vehicular movement in the Kathmandu Valley was disrupted throughout the day today due to a chakkajam organised by the All Nepal Transport Workers Association. It resumed at 5 pm following an agreement between the police, entrepreneurs and transport workers.
Thousands of people were affected due to the strike called to protest police baton-charge on transport workers that injured some 35 transport workers. The cops allegedly vandalised some 40 buses last night. The administration has agreed to provide compensation to the owners of the damaged buses and bear the treatment cost of those injured in the incident.
According to Govinda Poudel, central member of the All Nepal Trade Union Federation, the strike was lifted after the administration agreed to take action against all the police personnel stationed at the Lokanthali police station. Poudel claimed that the police vandalised the vehicles with the help of locals. He also said a transport worker is undergoing treatment at the B & B hospital in Gwarko and is still unconscious.
The agreement was reached during a meeting attended by ANTWA president Jagat Simkhada, ANTUF central committee member Poudel, president of the Araniko Highway Yatayat Sewa Samiti (AHYSS) Kedar Chhetri and SPs representing Kathmandu and Bhaktapur districts.
The clash between the police and transport workers ensued last evening after the policemen stationed at Lokanthali allegedly manhandled a driver of a bus belonging to the AHYSS after the driver denied producing his license claiming innocence.
