Where new moms are denied food!

Kathmandu, November 24:

A team of human rights activists and lawyers, after inspecting Sanai VDC in of Nawalparasi district, has found that people there have been following a tradition of not giving anything to women soon after delivering babies.

The villagers don’t give even water to women for five days after their first delivery and for three days after their second delivery.

“We visited the village and found out that there are about 60 houses with 300 people, but they have been following such a tradition,” said advocate Lokhari Basyal who headed the team.

“We also called the CDO and offices concerned to do something to stop such a practice, but their initiatives could not yield any positive result,” he said. When they met women in the village, the latter complained about the practice and requested help.

Meera Dhungana, an advocate, said that there is an urgent need for the government to intervene and the authorities concerned should take immediate steps to stop such a practice.
