Woman held for defrauding Rs 4.3m via Facebook

KATHMANDU: A team deployed from the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police on Thursday reportedly arrested a woman on charge of swindling Rs 4.3 million from 34 persons by befriending with them in social networking site Facebook.

Issuing a press statement today, CIB said 33-year-old Ang Leme Sherpa of Gudle in Solukhumbu district, currently residing in Tinchule of Bouddha in KMC-6 was arrested from Tinchule today.

Sherpa identified herself as a foreigner in Facebook and befriended with many Nepali friends.

She tempted them of being rich and allured them of sending lavish electronic goods including iPhone, iPad, pearl necklace and urged them to pay tax clearance to receive goods.

She took her gullible target into confidence by sending a picture of parcel in her social networking site, it said in the statement.

SP Meera Chaudhary speaking to THT Online over the phone, said detail information are awaited as investigation is underway, however, she said IME could have been used to swindle Rs 4.3 million.

Meanwhile, police presented the suspect before the Kathmandu District Court and remanded in custody for further investigation.
