Women journos’ memo to minister
KATHMANDU: Working Women Journalists today submitted a memorandum to Minister for Information and Communications Shankar Pokhrel demanding gender-friendly atmosphere in media houses. Minister Pokhrel told the delegation that it would take time to institutionalise changes especially during the transitional phase. Stating that the government had always encouraged women journalists, he pledged support in ensuring special privileges for them. He said the WWJs should fight for their improved status, asking them not to expect changes overnight. He said the establishment of numerous radio stations had produced more women journalists. Sangita Lama, president, WWJ, said women were facing discrimination in media houses in terms of pay and perks compared to their male counterparts. She demanded facilities at par with the male mediapersons. — HNS
