Bhaktapur, August 22

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari today said women now had the opportunity to work as people’s representatives from the local level to the Parliament.

Addressing the closing ceremony of Shrawani fair organised by Doleshwor Temple Development Committee in Suryabinayak Municipality-4, President Bhandari said as the new constitution had ensured representation of women in all state mechanisms, women had an equal role as men to play in society and for the development of the country.

Urging women to utilise the opportunity given by the constitution, she said the country’s development was not a far-fetched dream if everyone worked together. “I think the constitution has ensured the rights of all citizens, irrespective of their gender and the community they belong to. We definitely can make progress if we work together,” she said. On the occasion, President Bhandari also offered prayers at the temple.

Committee senior vice-chairperson Kiran Thapa said they had raised Rs 550 million from donors to reconstruct the temple, which was badly damaged in the 2015 earthquakes.

The closing programme was presided over by committee chairperson Bidur Man Singh Basnet.
