World Habitat Day being observed today

Kathmandu, October 29

The Ministry of Urban Development has decided to mark World Habitat Day tomorrow.

At the call of UN Human Settlements Programme, the first Monday of October is marked as World Habitat Day every year. But as the first Monday fell during Tihar festival, the ministry decided to mark the day tomorrow, the last Monday of this month.

MoUD Spokesperson Shambhu KC said the government would mark World Habitat Day and  World Town Planning Day tomorrow. Usually, the Town Planning Day is marked on November 8 every year. These two days are being observed the same day in order to incorporate habitat issues in town planning as per the federal set-up of the country, KC added.

However, separate committees have been formed to organise programmes to mark these days. The programmes will sensitise stakeholders about issues of town planning at the central, provincial and local levels. The national slogan for this year’s World Town Planning Day is ‘Town Planning in Federal Nepal.’

Director General at Department of Urban Development and Building Construction Ramesh Prasad Singh said four satellite cities were being developed in Kathmandu Valley.
