KATHMANDU, APRIL 27
This Sunday, a remarkable 22-year-old Nepali woman from Rolpa will take on the prestigious London Marathon, representing both Nepal and the organisation that transformed her life. Asma, rescued by Child Rescue Nepal in 2019, will run alongside world-class athletes in the first wave of the London Marathon on April 27.
Asma's journey began in difficult circumstances. After losing her mother at age ten and facing hardship at home, she ran away at eleven years old and ended up working in a brick factory. She later worked long hours at a guesthouse for minimal pay, teaching herself to read from discarded schoolbooks.
In January 2019, at age sixteen, Child Rescue Nepal rescued Asma, enabling her to receive an education and discover her remarkable talent for long-distance running. She has since become an accomplished trail runner in Nepal, completing races as long as 180 kilometres and collecting numerous medals along the way.
"Asma's transformation exemplifies the incredible potential within every child we rescue," said Bhaskar Karki, Country Director of Child Rescue Nepal. "From working in a brick kiln to competing in an international marathon, her journey fills our entire team with immense pride. Her determination to give back to the organisation that supported her shows her exceptional character. Asma is not just running for herself, but for all children in Nepal who still need our help."
Soon to join the armed police in Nepal, Asma will be making her first trip outside her homeland to compete in London. She will fuel her marathon effort with Snickers bars and water, aiming for an impressive finishing time of three hours.
"I'm excited to experience things I've never seen before and to meet the Child Rescue Nepal supporters whose generous donations changed my life," said Asma. "Running the marathon provides an opportunity to raise awareness for children still needing to be rescued."
This inspiring story represents a powerful full-circle moment – a rescued girl giving back to the charity that once rescued her. Asma's participation in the London Marathon symbolises hope and possibility for vulnerable children across Nepal.
