Quake thru’ the lenses of photogs

KATHMANDU: When the disastrous earthquake struck the nation about one year ago, it shook the lives of people, and caused an irreparable damage to the lives and property. And to recall the impacts of the catastrophic quake of April 2015, Rising Pattipa Youth Club organised a photo exhibition ‘Reminiscence of earthquake 2015’ on April 17 at Bikalpa Art Centre, Pulchowk.

Sixty photographs by 29 photographers — professional photo journalists and others — showcased what happened during the earthquake, how it affected people’s life, relief efforts along with people coping with the situation. It was divided in three segments.

Aerial photographs of Kathmandu Valley, Basantapur Durbar Square, Boudhanath, Patan Durbar square, Dharahara, Gorkha and more dominated the first segment of the exhibition. Works of photojournalists Bikram Rai, Skanda Gautam, Naresh Shrestha, Navesh Chitrakar and Bikash Karki were on display in this segment. In one of the photos, Rai had captured the aerial view of Valley from Hattiban — it was shot four minutes after the quake struck on April 25, 2015. As such dust puffs are seen in different areas, indicating the collapse of physical structures due to the quake.

Gautam has captured the collapsed Dharahara and its surrounding in wide shot — people are seen marching carrying candle lights to pray for those who died due to the quake expressing solidarity with others affected by the earthquake.

People’s emotions, and their changed lifestyle due to the earthquake are featured in the second segment. Photojournalist Narendra Shrestha for instance has captured the face of a young boy from Larpark injured during the tremor. His cheeks and mouth have numerous small cuts. In a backdrop of a landscape with collapsed houses in Sindhupalchowk, photographer Nirmal Dahal has framed a woman carrying empty vessels in a doko to fill water.

Among many visitors present in the exhibition was Gagan Thapa, Member of Parliament. And photo of mass cremation in Bhaktapur “made me sentimental”. The photo by Chitrakar had captured the mass cremation of people who died in the earthquake. “But other photos have been captured in different contexts and are unique in their own way,” he added.
